tl:dr
Well-intentioned support and encouragement through success and challenges is priceless. Work and life led me to the natural evolution of opening a private practice as a way to pay this concept forward.
»»My work with small businesses began in 2003, weaving through my adult life. Working in spaces where folks do not feel represented, respected, or followed up with appropriately takes a toll on everyone; just like the supremacy culture many of us are indoctrinated into. In the past, colleagues and supervisors subjected me to harassment, transmisia, and the eventual reporting of a clinical supervisor for sexual misconduct with minor clients. Prior to that, I triumphed over experiencing the child welfare system and MST in the Army. This left me uniquely qualified to face what can be seen as systemic betrayal, so I was ready when it came back around. This kind of culture is agitating for all of us and even worse for the global majority.
How could anyone deny that there are options for long-term, successful outcomes? Initially, I thought working in advocacy or behind-the-scenes support for healthcare and social service was where I would work on these outcomes. However, my appreciation of the therapeutic process arrived after an experience with EMDR. This experience allowed me to shift my perspective and future in ways I didn’t have access to before. The willingness to say the quiet part of oppression out loud, specializing in success during pain, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) perspective, could sustain what I wanted to provide, and it couldn’t be done working for someone else.I wanted to provide a small space where folks could connect to others who wanted to honor a similar calling, be themselves, and expand. A space where secure, inclusive cultures are the norm, not exploitation and fear. Thus, Meadows Agency was formed for psychotherapy and another business opened for consulting. The intention is to remain small as an antidote to “progress is bigger/more”. I think of myself as part of a constellation of like-minded business owners who are tending to trees they will never sit under. For those looking to remain independent, yet connected to support without hierarchy or obligation. For those who understand the innate value that trusting relationships bring. Now, I couldn't be more grateful to be doing what I'm doing, even when it is difficult or seems impossible.
Personally, those closest to me know I live a contemplative, simple life while cherishing moments with my chosen family and friends; near and far. Originally from the stolen lands of the Choctaw Nation (Mississippi), I am a disabled Army veteran, white-bodied, NDGQ, and have lived-experience with post-traumatic growth. Dancing, meditation, reality shows, volunteering, reading, and reminding you of your agency are some of my interests.
